In 1998, Subaru released a small SUV called the Forester. In the 2008 model year, Subaru fitted the Forester standard with a 2.5-liter, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine that produced 173 horsepower. The two optional engines available were a 224-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.5-liter, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder and a 170-horsepower version of the non-turbocharged 2.5-liter. A filter mounted in the air-intake system kept outside dirt and debris from entering the combustion chamber and causing damage. Subaru recommends changing the air filter in the 2008 Forester at least every 30,000 miles.

Install Air Filter[edit]

Air Filter Replacement on Turbocharged Models

  • Open the Forester's hood and locate the air filter box -- the black plastic box on the passenger's side of the engine compartment.
  • Pull the two clasps at the front of the air filter box away from the air filter box lid until the clasps release. Pull the air filter box lid toward the passenger's side of the car and lift it up to remove it.
  • Grab the old air filter, noting its positioning in the air filter box, and pull it from the air filter box.
  • Clean the inside of the box with a damp cloth. Install a new air filter in the same position that was previously occupied by the old filter.
  • Set the air filter box lid back on the air filter box, guiding the tabs on the rear of the lid into the holes on the box. Press the clasps onto the air filter box lid until they snap into place.
  • Close the Forester's hood.

Air Filter Replacement on Non-Turbocharged Models

  • Open the Forester's hood and locate the air filter box -- the black plastic box on the passenger's side of the engine compartment.
  • Unlock the clasps on the front of the air filter box, by pressing them away from the box until they release. Press the air filter box lid toward the driver's side of the car and lift it up to remove it.
  • Remove and install the air filter, following steps 3 and 4 in the section titled "Air Filter Replacement on Turbocharged Models."
  • Set the air filter box lid on the air filter box, guiding the tabs on the rear of the driver's side of the box into the holes in the lid. Lock the box, by pressing the two clasps toward the air filter box until they snap into place.
